Minghella Just Says No To Persia
Actor turns down Bruckheimer blockbuster
by DIANE GARRETT
HOLLYWOOD- Big budget blockbuster "Prince Of Persia", the Mike Newell helmed film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney, has been turned down by its first choice for the lead role of "Dastan". The much talked about video game based pic skedded to lens this Summer in Morocco and slated as an '09 tentpole for Disney has been searching through every A list actor in town, finding Max Michael Minghella as the front runner.
The Armenian born, UK raised actor was not available for comment, and industry insiders are abuzz with why any thesp would turn down such a star making role.
Minghella's agent Todd Thompson of CAA issued a brief statement earlier today amidst the barrage of internet and industry speculation. " Maxie's got moxie, and he never backs down. His vision of a successful career is not about playing ridiculous fantasy based characters like Superman or the Prince of Persia or any other such nonsense. He is busy working on a film now, and has a passion project in the works after that. Deal with it."
Calls left with Bruckheimer and Disney were not returned.
Minghella is currently in production along with Rachel Weisz in Malta for Alejandro Amenabar's "Agora". Although his representatives declined to comment, rumors in town suggest said passion project may be a star making turn nonetheless.
"I Furnish This Land", the controversial biopic of Armenian cultural icon Farhad Farhoudi is rumored to be circling Minghella to star.
Farhoudi was a poor Yerevan based apprentice furniture retailer in the early 80's who lead his country to revolution and later became their most beloved pop star, famous for hits like "I'm arm deep in Armenia" and "Labor day's over, no more sale". The actor's Armenian heritage might suggest his reasoning in choosing "Furnish" over the Bruckheimer project.
American actor Garrett Hedlund, famous for roles in "Troy", "Friday Night Lights", "Four Brothers", and a recent ad campaign for Swedish underwear brand "MMansperson Ã…ska" (Male Thunder), is said to be the next choice to play the Prince.
Minghella is repped by CAA, Hedlund by Endeavor and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
